The Centre for Research and Expertise in Social Gerontology (CREGÉS) is proud to announce the publication of Vieillir dans un système fragmenté : Approches institutionnelles, communautaires et territoriales, a book bringing together contributions from several CREGÉS members and partners. It is being published by the Presses de l’Université du Québec and is edited by Patrik Marier, Scientific Director of CREGÉS, Meghan Joy, CREGÉS researcher, and Sandra Smele, Coordinator of our Inclusive Aging, Diversity, Health & Well-Being Domain of Expertise.
The book grew out of the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) Action concertée project, Les actions gouvernementales au Québec : impacts sur des personnes aînées marginalisées ou vivant des dynamiques d’exclusion sociale. This social gerontology project examined the coordination and governance of public policies, as well as the integration of services intended to better support marginalized older adults in Quebec.
Through the study of six groups—older immigrants and migrants, including those with precarious status; people aged 50 and over living with a serious mental illness; older adults experiencing homelessness; older adults involved in the criminal justice system; LGBT older adults; and older adults experiencing socioeconomic precarity in remote rural communities—the volume highlights both shared realities and the needs and challenges specific to each population.
More than a simple overview of the state of affairs, the book proposes concrete courses of action to better coordinate interventions, reduce administrative barriers and promote more equitable access to services. Intended for decision-makers, researchers, practitioners and community stakeholders alike, the book invites readers to rethink public initiatives in order to build a more inclusive, equitable and compassionate society.
