À l’intersection du vieillissement et de la santé mentale : la coordination des services offerts aux personnes de 50 ans et plus vivant avec un trouble mental grave

People aged 50 and over living with a severe mental disorder (SMD)—such as schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, or personality disorders—are at heightened risk of social exclusion. Research shows that this population often experiences premature physical aging, early loss of independence, and reduced life expectancy. These physical vulnerabilities are compounded by significant psychosocial challenges, including social isolation, economic precarity, and limited agency. 

The loss of independence affects several other areas of life, including income, housing, social support, and social inclusion. As a result, addressing the needs of people aged 50+ living with SMD requires coordinated and integrated responses across public and community health and social services. However, both public policies and service systems often overlook this population, effectively rendering them an “orphaned” clientele whose realities and needs are rarely taken into account. 

Drawing on findings from the research project Les actions gouvernementales au Québec : impacts sur les personnes âgées marginalisées ou vivant des dynamiques d’exclusion sociale (FQRSC, 2020–2025), this webinar will present key issues affecting people aged 50+ living with SMD. It will also highlight concrete avenues for improving service coordination and supporting more inclusive, responsive practices for this population.
